Position Summary:  The Provost is the Chief Academic Officer of the university, a senior advisor to the President and a member of the President's Cabinet.  As such, and in the context of the University's mission, vision and values, the Provost: 1) provides Christ-centered, visionary leadership for the undergraduate and graduate academic administration; 2) directs opportunities for the growth, development or discontinuation of academic programs based in the context of marketplace needs and constituent demands; 3) sets and achieves enrollment (recruitment, retention, advising, placement) goals and objectives; 4) articulates and infuses Christ-centered, Lutheran culture and four-pillared promise (i.e., community, inquiry, purpose, wisdom) throughout the university experience; 5) help to assure a vibrant and healthy co-curricular and student experience that enables students to grow holistically as they are equipped to learn, serve and lead in church and world.

Qualifications:

  • Possess an earned terminal degree (doctorate preferred).
  • Demonstrated achievement as an academic administrator at the post-secondary level.
  • Demonstrated administrative experience with increasing levels of responsibility including upper-level post-secondary administrative experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in working with face-to-face and online learners at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels.
  • Demonstrated ability to cultivate and sustain the Christian formation of faculty and staff.
  • Demonstrated achievement as an educator, scholar and researcher at the post-secondary level.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of current issues and trends in higher education including programmatic and institutional accreditation processes.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide positive, results-oriented leadership, including fiscal and personnel management.
  • Demonstrated ability to work as a member of a high-performance leadership team.
  • Demonstrated competence to provide institution wide, strategic counsel and support to the President.
  • Expertise in facilitation and knowledge of strategic planning models.
  • Knowledge of LCMS theology, practice and history.
  • A member in good standing on the roster of The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod (either ordained or commissioned) preferred.
  • Active member in good standing of a congregation of The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod.
  • Commitment to the mission of Lutheran, Christ-centered higher education and the specific mission and vision of CUNE.
  • Possess an aptitude to manage the fiscal dimensions of academic operations.
  • Possess an understanding of essential features of quality improvements with demonstrated desire to lead academic and institutional excellence, especially the development of faculty and the assessment of student academic achievement.
  • Possess an understanding of and experience in development, implementation and evaluation of academic programs.
  • Possess an understanding of and experience in enrollment management and marketing.
  • Possess an understanding of and experience in student services, including advisement, co-curricular experiences, placement, and student development.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to communicate effectively with a diverse set of audiences.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills.

General Duties:

Academics

  • Strengthens the university's academic enterprise by providing visionary leadership and prudent fiscal management to the Deans of the Colleges and, with their support, implements recruitment plans, manages, budgets, evaluates academic majors/programs, develops short and long-term curricular plans and promotes excellence in teaching, scholarship, research and service.
  • Cultivates the faculty in simultaneous left-hand kingdom academic development and right-hand kingdom Christian formation.
  • Establishes yearly strategic performance objectives that are clear, measurable and communicated appropriately, encouraging the development of an assessment culture that seeks to measure results tied to student learning outcomes and curriculum modification, and oversees the completion of annual academic plan.
  • Empowers and enables faculty to achieve excellence in teaching, research and service by providing necessary tools, resources and policies.
  • Oversees management of the academic enterprise which includes: conducting academic and faculty business; serving as the institution's liaison for its various accreditations and for other regulatory agencies; serving as exofficio member of faculty committees; participating in professional and collegial organizations; overseeing commencement activities; managing the academic calendar; and administering the faculty handbook, academic catalogs, and faculty/staff growth plans.

Presidential Support

  • Supports the President's spiritual leadership of the university by serving student, faculty, staff, Cabinet and other constituents to enhance the development of CUNE's Christ-centered, Lutheran community and commitment.
  • Supports the President in communicating the university's Lutheran identity and culture as articulated in the university's mission and vision statements and, through the fulfillment of its strategic plan, its preparation of students for Christian vocation in church and world.
  • Serves with the President in developing and implementing a visionary strategic plan that positions CUNE as the church's school and as a leader in equipping students for lives of learning, service and leadership in the church and world.

Support and Fortify the Academic Experience - Provides strategic academic leadership through integration of systems, structures and staff, completing and following for successful outcomes:

  • Enrollment Management and Marketing: a) in coordination with the Senior Vice President of Enrollment and Marketing, sets and achieves enrollment goals and objectives in the areas of recruitment, retention, advisement and placement, with on-going assessment and evaluation of progress communicated in regularly scheduled meetings; b) works to ensure CUNE's Promise of a Lutheran Education is articulated and infused in all communication efforts.
  • Student Services and Athletics: a) works with the Executive Vice President and Vice President of Student Affairs and Athletics to ensure vibrant, healthy co-curricular and student life experiences to equip students holistically in the context of a Lutheran, Christ-centered community; b) works to ensure CUNE's faith and academic commitments are infused through the entire student experience.
  • Library Services: a) ensures library services and resources are integrated with academic goals and meet faculty and student needs.
  • Registrar: a) ensures academic standards and institutional policies, as related to enrollment, registration, maintenance of data, course catalogues, calendars, graduation and reporting, are met and enhanced.
