Position Summary:  This position provides artistic direction and vision for the Center for Liturgical Arts (CLA), a university institute.  The position works as an artist, and manages other artists, in order to create compelling designs and projects intended to enhance the silent witness of visual arts in worship.  The key focus of this position is new job acquisition and development.


  • Bachelor's degree in Art, required.
  • MFA preferred
  • Experienced artist.
  • Experience with photography; ability to produce high quality photographs.
  • Knowledge, experience and training in liturgical art, required.
  • Must be able to create quality designs and express control over the elements and principles of art, as well as understand and communicate to clients the theological implications of all design decisions.
  • Knowledge of contract preparation.
  • Knowledge of donor relations.
  • Proficiency in the use of software applications, including Microsoft applications, databases, spreadsheets and word processing helpful.
  • Proficiency in use of Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign.
  • Travel is required.
  • Knowledge of safety standards with regard to paints, power tools, etc.
  • Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod (LCMS) background and/or values aligned with the LCMS.

General Duties:

  • Provides high quality designs and aesthetic direction to the CLA.
  • Creates templates, fabricates and installs artwork as needed.
  • Communicates with commissioning bodies to develop projects.
  • Oversees all aspects of project development and execution.
  • Works with Institutional Advancement office to identify, cultivate and build relationships with CLA donors.
  • Coordinates with CUNE marketing department for press releases and marketing material relative to the CLA.
  • Designs and conducts presentations at conferences, congregations, or other group opportunities to secure commissions.
  • Maintains the CLA blog and social media outlets.
  • Participates in CLA advisory board.
  • Conducts site visits to potential projects to meet with clients, gather information, and take photos.
  • Provides high quality photographic documentation of all projects and processes.
  • Assists in the training and direction of student workers.
  • Other duties as assigned.
